Ackworth Howard Church of England Junior & Infant School was built in 1833 by Miss Rachel Howard. Miss Howard was well educated due to her family’s wealthy background and started to teach children in her home ‘The Villa’ owned by her father Luke Howard. She taught them the three Rs, reading, writing and arithmetic!

After some time and thought she decided to build a school in the village. The school is built of Ackworth sandstone and cost £450. Miss Rachel Howard unfortunately died in 1837 just after her 33rd Birthday. Her legacy lives on and her birthday is celebrated on the 22 September and is known as “Rachel Howard Day”.

Her brother John Elliot Howard built the infant classroom, which is now Little Acorns in 1873 in the same style and stone as the main school. Her father Luke Howard was a Quaker who later converted to the Plymouth Brethren. A Plymouth Brethren burial ground is located in the school grounds.
