Joseph Hoyland Fox married Mariana Fox Tuckett (1837-1908) in 1860 at the Meeting House in Frenchay near Bristol. Mariana was the eldest daughter of Francis Tuckett and his wife Mariana Fox (daughter of Robert Were Fox (1754-1818) of Falmouth. Joseph was Chairman of Fox Brothers and a founder member of the British Alpine Club. He sometimes accompanied Frank Tuckett on his mountaineering expeditions.
