Wellington RFC was founded in 1874 by Harry Fox. Harry was from the Quaker Fox family who owned Fox Bros. Wellingtons first game was played against Taunton Independent College. The game was lost by one “goal” to nil..

The early games were played at a field in Shuteleigh in the present Pyles Thorne area. The belief that the old Victorian stand (demolished in 1984) was built in his memory is incorrect; Harry had instigated a public subscription long before his passing. However, at the time of Harry’s death, the stand was in the early planning stages. Harry’s famous quote was “It is not necessary to live but it is necessary to play”.
